Swan Song

Sadly, this is the last “Everyday English” topic: Ajarn Waan is talking to

 John and Wirat, two characters who have featured in a lot of the dialogues.

น่าเศร้ามาก ที่คราวนี้เป็นหัวข้อครั้งสุดท้ายของ “Everyday English”   แล้ว  อาจารย์หวานกำลังคุยอยู่กับ John และวิรัตน์ ซึ่งเป็นสองตัวละครที่พบบ่อยๆในบทสนทนาของเรา  

Waan: Well, this is the last topic …my swan song!

John:  What a shame! But all good things must come to an end, I suppose.

Wirat:  That’s for sure. When did Everyday English first start, Ajarn?

Waan: Back in 2004…..It was weekly in those days.

Wirat:  Then it became fortnightly a couple of years ago, right?

John: Right! It was about that time that you and I started featuring in the dialogues, Wirat.

Wirat:  You must have written several hundred topics, Ajarn…Have you ever been stuck for ideas?

Waan: A few times, Wirat, I have to admit!

John:  And are there any topics of which you are particularly proud?

Waan: Well I think my all-time favourite must be the one I did on the coup d’état which was on the web within days of the coup taking place in Bangkok!

John: So what are you going to do now?

Waan: Oh I’ve got my finger in lots of pies so I won’t be at a loose end!

Wirat:  What’s more important is what are we going to do without you, Ajarn?

Waan: Find other ways of practising English…and enjoy learning! Languages are so much fun!

John:  We’ve certainly had fun with Everyday English, haven’t we, Wirat?

Wirat:  Yes, that’s for sure….and we’ve learnt a great many things too! So….

John & Wirat: ….thanks for everything, Ajarn Waan!

Waan: เออ นี่ก็เป็นหัวข้อสุดท้ายแล้วนะ.... swan song ของฉัน  

John:  น่าเสียดายจัง แต่ทุกอย่างก็ต้องมีวันจบ ผมคิดว่านะ

Wirat:  นั่นมันแน่นอนอยู่แล้วละ แล้ว Everyday English เริ่มครั้งแรกตั้งแต่เมื่อไหร่ครับอาจารย์? 

Waan: ก็ตั้งแต่ปี  2004 โน่น....ในตอนนั้นก็เป็นรายสัปดาห์เลยล่ะ 

Wirat:  แล้วมาเป็นรายปักษ์ เมื่อไม่กี่ปีมานี่เอง  ใช่มั้ย?  

John: ใช่ ก็ช่วงนี้แหละ  ที่คุณกับผมเริ่มมาปรากฏในบทสนทนาไงวิรัตน์         

Wirat:  อาจารย์ต้องเขียนออกมาแล้วรวมหลายร้อยหัวข้อแน่เลย....แล้วอาจารย์เคยมาถึงทางตันบ้างมั้ยครับ?     

Waan:  ต้องยอมรับว่า เป็นบ้างเหมือนกันในบางครั้งนะ วิรัตน์    

John:  แล้วมีหัวข้อไหนที่อาจารย์ภูมิใจเป็นพิเศษครับ? 

Waan: เรื่องที่ฉันชอบมากที่สุด  ก็คือเรื่องที่เขียนเกี่ยวกับการปฏิวัติ ซึ่งสามารถนำขึ้นเผยแพร่บนเว็บไซด์ได้ภายในไม่กี่วันหลังจากเกิดปฏิวัติขึ้นในกรุงเทพฯ    

John: แล้วต่อไปอาจารย์จะไปทำอะไรครับ?             

Waan: ฉันมีงานอีกมากที่จะต้องทำ ก็คงไม่ได้นั่งอยู่ว่างๆ หรอก           

Wirat:  ที่สำคัญ แล้วพวกเราจะเป็นอย่างไรเมื่อไม่มีอาจารย์ ? 

Waan: ลองหาวิธีการฝึกฝนจากหนทางอื่นดู...และสนุกกับมัน การเรียนรู้ภาษาเป็นเรื่องสนุกนะ         

John:  เราสนุกกับ  Everyday English อย่างมากเลยใช่มั้ยพวกเรา วิรัตน์ ?  

Wirat:  ใช่แน่นอน...แล้วเราก็ได้เรียนรู้หลายสิ่งหลายอย่างด้วย งั้น.....

Getting Started

By changing one letter at a time and at each change making a new word, can you change SWAN to SONG?

Vocab-Builder: Frequency

As you know from the dialogue, Everyday English was originally weekly and then fortnightly (once every two weeks). There are many words which tell you how often something happens. Some, like weekly and monthly, are easy: others, like fortnightly, are more difficult. Do you know the words for the following frequencies?

จากบทสนทนาข้างต้นคุณก็จะทราบว่าแต่เดิมนั้น  Everyday English เคยเป็นแบบรายสัปดาห์ (weekly)  แล้วก็มาเป็นรายปักษ์ (fortnightly) มีคำอีกหลายคำที่ใช้บอกความถี่ของสิ่งที่เกิดขึ้น   อย่าง weekly และ  monthly  นั้นง่าย  คำอื่นอย่าง fortnightly  นั้นก็ยากขึ้นไปอีกนิด  คุณรู้จักคำเฉพาะที่ใช้สำหรับบอกความถี่ที่ให้มาข้างล่างนี้หรือไม่?

2.    twice a year

3.    once every 3 months

Hint: Be careful with 2 and 5: the words are very similar!

ใบ้ให้ ให้ระวังข้อที่ 2 และ 5 ทั้งสองคำนี้ใกล้เคียงกันมาก 

Grammar Corner

Wirat asks Ajarn Waan if she has ever been stuck for ideas. Stuck is the past participle of to stick and to be stuck for something means to be in need of something. It is often used in association with words like words, money etc.

วิรัตน์ถามอาจารย์หวานว่าเธอ  ever been stuck for ideas. Stuck เป็นกริยาช่องที่สามของ to stick และ to be stuck for something  หมายถึง ขัดสนหรือขาดแคลน หรือ to be in need of something.  โดยปกติจะใช้ในการเชื่อมโยงกับคำ อย่าง words, money  เป็นต้น

e.g.

•   Sue was just stuck for words when Jim asked her to marry him!
• Can you lend me 1,000 baht? I’m stuck for cash right now.

Phrase in Focus: Back in 2004

Ajarn Waan says that Everyday English started back in 2004. How is this different from just in 2004? It is different in 2 ways:

อาจารย์หวาน พูดว่า Everyday English นั้น เริ่ม  back in 2004 . แล้วแตกต่างอย่างไรกับ in 2004  เฉยๆ?  มันต่างกันสองลักษณะคือ 

• It sounds more natural  ฟังเป็นธรรมชาติมากกว่า 
• It adds emphasis to the time that passed since then. มันเน้นย้ำถึงช่วงเวลาที่ได้ผ่านมาแล้ว       

To refer to an event even longer ago and add even more emphasis, you can add the word way.

เมื่ออ้างถึงเหตุการณ์ที่ผ่านมานานกว่านี้อีก และเน้นย้ำเพิ่มมากขึ้นอีก  ก็ทำได้ด้วยการเติมคำว่า way เพิ่มเข้าไป

 e.g. My father died way back in 1965.

Know Your Idioms

There are several idioms in the dialogue this time: let’s look at them all in a little more detail:

มีคำคมมากมายในบทสนทนาของคราวนี้  ลองมาดูคำเหล่านี้ในรายละเอียดเพิ่มเติมกัน 

• Swan song: According to tradition, a swan sings before it dies. So a final

performance, poem, play etc is known as a swan song

ตามประเพณีแล้วหงส์จะร้องก่อนที่มันจะตาย  ฉะนั้น การแสดง บทกวี  การละเล่น ที่เป็นครั้งสุดท้าย  จึงเรียกกันว่า a swan song

• All good things must come to an end: This saying is easy to understand:

nothing can go on forever, however enjoyable it might be.

คำกล่าวนี้เข้าใจได้ง่าย ไม่มีอะไรที่จะดำเนินต่อไปโดยไม่มีวันจบได้ ไม่ว่าจะสนุกแค่ไหน

• To have a finger in the pie: This means to be involved in something, so as

Ajarn Waan says I’ve got my finger in lots of pies, she is going to be busy with lots of other things after Everyday English ends.

ความหมาย คือการมีส่วนเกี่ยวข้องในบางสิ่งบางอย่าง ฉะนั้น ที่อาจารย์หวาน พูดว่า I’ve got my finger in lots of pies  เธอก็จะยุ่งกับสิ่งอื่นๆ อีกมากหลังจากที่ Everyday English  ได้จบลงไป 

• To be at a loose end: This idiom may come from weaving, and means to not

have anything to do, to be bored

คำคมนี้อาจจะมาจากการทอผ้าและหมายถึง to not have anything to do, to be bored คืออยู่ว่างๆ ไม่มีอะไรทำ  น่าเบื่อหน่าย

The words a few, several and a couple all occur in the dialogue: can you put them in order of quantity, from least to most?

คำว่า a few, several และ a couple ทั้งหมดนั้น ปรากฎอยู่ในบทสนทนา  ลองเรียงลำดับคำเหล่านั้นตามปริมาณจากน้อยไปหามากดู ดีไหม?
