Parts of speech are quite important in English since words change their form when they have a different function. For instance the verb to invite becomes invitation when it is a noun. Here are some of the ways you can change the verbs into a noun:

Noun Verbs.

Some of the nouns and verbs have the same form. They are called noun verbs.

For example:

I have been working all night. I haven’t had any sleep at all. (noun)

Babies sleep most of the day. (verb)

Let’s go for a walk. (noun)

We can walk to the corner store and get some soft drinks. (verb)

“My love is like a red red rose.” (noun)

I love you. (verb)

Don’t forget to give your mother a call to tell her that we are coming. (noun)

I forgot to call my sister last night. (verb)

We could smell wet paint as we walked into the room. (noun)

We needed to paint the walls new. (verb)

I don’t want to hear your excuses. (noun)

Please excuse me while I answer the phone. (verb)

What’s the answer to the question number 2? (noun)

Answer the following questions on the basis of what’s stated or implied in the passage. (verb)

There are many more noun verbs. They are usually short simple words. However, you should check your dictionary to make sure.

-ion

You can add the suffix -ion to a verb to make it a noun. If the verbs end with -e, cut the -e and then add -ion. Sometimes you have to change some letters; such as changing a ‘d’ into an ‘s’ and adding an ‘a’.

For example:

confuse confusion

invade invasion

invite invitation

organize organization

appreciate appreciation

relax relaxation
