When we would like to compare two things that have pretty much
the same quality, we use the expression, as
as
For example:
During Bangkok rush hours, one should walk.
It's as fast as taking a bus.(Walking = Taking a bus)
This restaurant is as expensive as that one around the
corner but the food is not as good (as that one).
(this restaurant = the restaurant on the corner,
in terms of price) and (the food in this restaurant =/= the food in that restaurant)
I'm sorry. I came as soon as I could.
(coming = being able to)
You can see that the words that come
between as and as are either an adjective or an adverb. In the first two
sentences, the adjectives, fast and expensive, are used. But
soon in the third sentence is an adverb. It modifies the verb, come.
Let's have a look at some more examples:
John is 175 cm tall. His father is also 175. John has 5 million dollars in his bank, but his father has 10 million.
- John is as tall as his father, but he is not as rich as his father.
I thought this meal must have been over 1000 baht. In fact it came to 750.
- The meal did not cost as much as I expected.
Tom works very hard in school. Mary, his sister works very hard too.
- Tom works as hard in school as Mary (does).
Sue has long hair. Maggie has long hair too.
- Sue's hair is as long as Maggie's hair.
You can also use the expression: twice as
as, and three times as
as.
John's father is twice as rich as john.
His house is twice as big as his parents' house.
This restaurant is twice as expensive as the one we went to last week.
An imported car is three times as expensive as a car made in the country.
We can also say the same
as. But this expression is used with a noun. |
