Prepositions are, generally speaking, words that tell us
position and time. They also show relationships between nouns such as
telling purpose and belongings. It's used with nouns or pronouns,
and the word that follows a preposition is the object of preposition.
For example:

When we will leave for the conference depends on the boss.
Near the station is a big shopping mall with a swimming pool
on the rooftop.
Each preposition has different meanings and usage.
Generally, prepositions tell the position or direction.
For example:
You should stay in bed if you don't feel well.
The pen lies under the table.
Off the highway are many inns and restaurants.
Prepositions also serve as time markers. Note the different uses of preposition with time.
For example:

On January 9.
On your birthday
In January
In spring
In the year 2001 |

at noon
at lunch time |
Prepositions have many other functions as exemplified below.

Talk about the annual budget
Food for thoughts (purpose)
