Topic: Reduced Adjective Clause |

For the past few weeks, we have been on the topic of adjective clause. This is the
last of the adjective clause series. Lets review the following sentences:
Anyone who is looking for a peaceful quiet place should visit Koh Samui.
There are many small shops which sell souvenirs along the beach.
Products which are made from crocodile skin are available for sale at the Crocodile Farm.
There are many places in Bangkok worth visiting for tourists who are interested in arts and culture.
Over 600 million people, who represent every race and continent, believe in Islam.
The parts in italic are adjective clauses. To make these clauses shorter, you can omit the relative
pronoun and the verb to be. If there is no verb to be, change the main verb in the -ing form.
The shortened version of the above sentences will be:
Anyone looking for a peaceful quiet place should visit Koh Samui.
Products made from crocodile skin are available for sale at the Crocodile Farm.
There are many places in Bangkok worth visiting for tourists interested in arts and culture.
There are many small shops selling souvenirs along the beach.
Over 600 million people, representing every race and continent, believe in Islam.
The shortened part is called reduced adjective clause or verbal phrase. The verbal phrase
(verb -ing or -ed) can modify a noun in front of it. However, you cant shorten the clause when the subject of
the main clause is not the same as that of the adjective clause.
For example:
The people who we met on the trip were nice. This sentence cant be reduced because the subject of
the main clause is people while that of the adjective clause is we.
The participle forms of the verb can be a noun modifier. The present participle form of the verb (v-ing)
suggests that the noun is active of doing the action, but the past participle (v-ed or v3) suggests that the
noun is passive and cant do the action of the verb.
Here are some more examples:
Active:
I didnt talk much to the man sitting next to me on the plane.
The company sent me a brochure containing all the information I needed.
The taxi taking us to the airport broke down.
At the end of the street there is a path leading to the river.
Passive:
A boy injured in the accident was taken to hospital.
A window broken in the storm last night has now been repaired.
The paintings stolen from the museum havent been found yet.
