The use of such and so is very simple.
Just remember to use such with nouns and so with adjectives and adverbs and you'll be fine. |
We use such before a noun (with or without an adjective).
such (+ adjective) + noun
She is such a fool.
He's got such patience.
I've never met such a nice person.
It was such a good film that I saw it twice. |
We use so before an adjective alone (without a noun). It means 'very'.
so + adjective
She is so foolish.
He is so patient with her.
Your mother was so nice.
The film was so good that I saw it twice. |
We cannot use either such or so with 'the', demonstrative pronouns or possessives.
I'm happy to visit Bangkok. It's so beautiful.
(NOT... your so beautiful city.) |
So and such can be followed by that-clauses.
It was so hot that we had to go out.
It was such a hot day that we had to go out. |
