Topic: Another and the Other |
9 May 2002 |
We use another with a singular noun. It gives a
general idea of what is mentioned. We do not refer to anything in particular.
For example:
There are many students in my class. Two students are sick today. Another student is late.
My radio does not work. I will have to buy another one.
If we save up for another year, we can afford a house.
The other refers to something specific. It means one of the two.
For example:
Tony has two brothers. One is a lawyer; the other is a doctor.
I left my other bag upstairs. Can you stay here and watch this bag?
The other computer in the staff room has virus, so they have to
share one computer.
The other can be used with plural nouns. This is still specific.
It means the other group of items or the rest.
A few students were late, so the other students on the field trip had to wait for them.
My father disagrees with everyone in the family. The other members of the family
(except me) don't get along with him.
Robert bought this car because the other cars in the tent were too old.
We never use another with a plural noun because another means one more.
Instead, we use other.
You should respect other people, but should not let them dictate your life.
Joe eats only carrots because he hates all other vegetables.
Joan loves to read Stephen King. She thinks other writers are boring.
