Topic: Study / Learn |
7 November 2002 |
Hello, English learners. How long have you been studying/learning English?
Do you like studying English? I am sure you enjoy it; otherwise,
you won't be learning English with the English Nanny.
Am I right?
To study and to learn
have slightly different meanings and they have different usage.
To study is to learn by practicing, reading and listening. You are taught systematically.
For example:
Florence is studying in the second year of university.
Her brother studied Engineering at a university in Tokyo.
Their parents want him to study law at Harvard
To study can also mean to examine carefully.
For example:
You can see many tourists in Bangkok studying their maps.
Yupa is studying the train table.
Tony usually takes a long time to study the menu.
To learn is to gain knowledge or skills by practice, or experience.
You don't need to be taught. You learn some skills by doing it.
To learn is usually used with to infinitive.
For example:
Jimmie learned American history in his class today.
Ken is learning to drive with his brother.
You should learn to cook some simple dishes before going abroad to live on your own.
Learning to swim is not very difficult. However, many people can't swim.
Another meaning of to learn is to be informed about something.
For example:
Have the parents of the victim learned about the incident?
Tim has been depressed since he has learned about his grades for the last semester.
You can use both verbs with some of the skill subjects.
For example:
I learned / studied English in London.
We learn / study computer at school.
English and computer can be studied as a formal subject or can be practiced on your own.
Note:
To study = to learn by reading or listening, mostly in a formal classroom setting.
= to examine carefully
To learn = to gain knowledge and skills by practicing
= to learn about something
