Topic: Farther and Further |
8 May 2003 |
We usually confuse farther with further since in one usage,
they have the same meaning. But in another sense, they do not.
Therefore, you cant use them interchangeably at all times.
Farther is the comparative form of the adjective far:
far-farther-the farthest.
(British English) In other words, father means more far or of a longer distance.
Further, in American usage, can also be the comparative form
of the same adjective: far- further-the furthest.
For example: *
They live much farther away.
London is far, but New York is farther from Bangkok.
The trip seems further than it is if you take a bus.
* In the above examples, the two words can be used interchangeably.
Another meaning of the word further is more, additional, besides
or in addition, which has nothing to do with distance. It can be both adjective and adverb.
On the other hand, the meaning of farther is restricted to the comparison of far.
For example:
Further evidence is needed to prove his point. (Not farther)
We are almost there. Let s walk a bit further.
If you want further information, please call the number printed on the back of this card.
Note:
farther = of a longer distance
further = (adj.) of a longer distance
= (adj.) more, additional
= (adv.) in addition, besides
