Headaches, headaches!! Why are there so many words in English that look alike and
sound alike? Trying to answer that probably gives you more headaches. To learn them,
you have to stay focused and try not to get confused.
This week let's have a look at pass and past. To pass is a verb,
which means to go past something, to forward or to achieve something.
For example:
We have passed the same soi twice but can't find your house.
I pass the bookstore on the way home every day.
Can you please pass the salad bowl?
I will pass the message on to him as soon as he gets in.
All students who passed the university entrance exam cerebrated.
If he passes his history exam, he won't have to study during the summer.
Past in a preposition. It is used with a noun. Past means beyond something.
For example:
The library is past the football field.
I never get past the first hundred pages of a novel.
The baby is cranky because it's past his bedtime.
Walk past the traffic circle and you will see the train station on your right.
Past can also be an adjective. It means gone in time.
For example:
The appointment time is past.
No one remembers his/her past life.
The past month was very difficult for him since he just lost his job.
