Topic: In time/ on time |
2 May 2002 |
I am a punctual person. I am usually on time for my classes and all of my appointments.
But one day, on my way to class, there was an accident. The traffic was backed up for miles
(or kilometers depending on whether you are thinking American or British).
I decided to take a motorcycle taxi. I told the rider to go to Thammasat University.
When we got to Jatujak Park, I realized he was taking me to the Rangsit campus,
so I told him that I wanted to go to Ta Phrachan. I finally got to class at 9.30,
just in time for the first session. Oh, what a morning!
To be on time means to be punctual, not late.
If something is on time, it happens as planned.
The 10 o'clock flight took off on time. (It took off at precisely 10 o'clock.)
The meeting is at 2. Please be on time. (Please come at 2.)
Be on time. Don't be late.
The show was supposed to start at 7.30 but it didn't begin on time.
To be in time (for something or to do something) means to be soon enough.
Will you be back in time for the meeting?
I sent my friend a birthday card. Her birthday is next Sunday. I hope it arrives in time. (before the birthday)
Tony got home just in time to see the football match on TV. (He was almost late.)
I need to watch my shirt so that it can get dry in time.
