Topic: Speak or Talk? |

We all use our mouths to speak, to talk, to chat, to babble, to converse and to
"mouth" (this is a strictly Thai slang, please do not use it in English). Here are definitions
of different words for different ways of talking and speaking along with examples.
Let's go see how we speak!
Speak v. 1. make a conversation
He speaks with her about his work.
2. know and be able to use (a language)
This boy speaks German, French, Chinese and Thai.
Talk v. 1. say things, speak to give information
We talked for about an hour.
2. have the power of speech
This baby is learning how to talk.
Chat v. have a friendly, informal conversation
Girls at school love to chat on the phone.
Babble v. talk in a way that is difficult or impossible to understand
Stop babbling and speak more slowly.
Converse v. talk, exchange (opposite) ideas
We are conversing about the traffic problems in Bangkok.
Discuss v. talk or write about something, find the solution for something
We discussed when we should go out.
