Topic: Fact and truth |
24 April 2003 |
Fact and truth are both true, but some facts
can later be proven to be false.
It was know as a fact that the world was flat until it is proven that the world is round.
It is evident that there is no other living thing on other planets in our Galaxy.
Who knows? One day that "fact" might be proven to be wrong again.
The truth is the meaning of the words, "fact" and "truth" is similar
but the usage is rather different. That's how they get confused and mixed up.
A fact is something that is known
or proven to be true, situations that have happened,
or a piece of information on which to base an argument.
For example:
The fact is that this man is innocent.
Regarding this new fact, we should not trust this dealer.
The fact that he often lies discredits him, just like the boy that cried wolf.
His speech is based on facts and figures.
A truth is the state of being true,
something that corresponds with known facts
or that is accepted to be true.
For example:
There's no truth in what he says.
The court is seeking to truth of what really happened.
I want you to tell me the truth.
