Topic: Fewer/less |
19 December 2002 |
Fewer and less is another confusing pair for Thai students.
Actually they are not that confusing, but if you are careless, you will get them mixed up.
We use few and fewer with plural countable nouns
while we use little and less with singular uncountable nouns.
Remember that uncountable nouns do not have the plural form.
For example:
Let's go out on weekdays. There are fewer people then. (Not less people)
The Johnsons earn less money than the Smyths, but they have fewer expenses.
They hired Jordan because the other candidate had fewer talents/ less talent. (Talent can be both countable and uncountable.)
We would like less trouble at school if that is possible.
Fewer shoppers buy things on credit cards.
Note :
Few and Fewer + countable nouns (plural)
Little and Less + uncountable nouns (singular)
