We often find most and most of along with other expressions of
quantity. This is not a problem of meaning but of usage.
We use most with plural nouns.
The meaning is in general sense while we use most of
with specific idea. Therefore, we use article the with most of.
You can also use demonstrative pronouns such as these, those or your.
For example:
Most students study for grades.
Most of the students in Bangkok have to study English. (specific group of students)
Most people spend time with families on weekends.
Most of the people I know like to go out to shopping malls. (certain group of people, specific)
Most bookstores have Harry Potter for sale.
Most of the bookstores in my neighborhood are closed after 8 o'clock.
