Topic: Sometimes/ Sometime |
14 November 2002 |
Sometimes and sometime
are actually two different words with different meanings.
Sometimes is an adverb of frequency.
It has the same meaning as occasionally, not very often.
For example:
We sometimes order a pizza when mother is not home.
Sometimes I feel lazy and just want to lie in bed all day.
We all forget things sometimes.
Sometime (without an s)
means an unspecified time in the past or future.
For example:
We should get together sometime.
I hope to see you sometime next week.
There will be a quiz some time during the semester.
To make things more complicated, let me introduce some times
and some time. They are slightly different from the first two. Some times means many times.
For example:
There are (some) times when
I feel lazy and just want to stay in bed all day.
A broken heart is difficult to cope with. Some times, you are fine.
Other times, you just want to break down and cry.
You are right some times, but not all the times.
Some time means a duration of time, a while.
He has been waiting for quite some time.
Some time before Jeff arrived, the parcel was delivered.
Give me some time to think about it.
Note:
Sometimes (adv.) occasionally, not very often
Sometime (adv.) an unspecified time in the past or future
Some times (n.)nbsp; many times
Some time (n.)nbsp; a while
