What's so confusing about these two words? Their pronunciation and spelling is.
To adopt is
1. to take somebody into one's family
Having no children of their own, they decided to adopt an orphan
2. to choose someone as a candidate or representative
He has been adopted as a member of the congress.
3. to take over and have or use as one's own
She had adopted the idea of getting a better job.

To adapt is
1. to make something suitable for a new use, situation, modify something
These styles can be adapted to suit individual tastes.
2. To become adjusted to new situation
Our eyes slowly adapted to the darkness.
