Late as an adjective, besides the meaning
of not being on time, means passed away or no longer alive.
My late wife means my dead wife. It doesn't mean that she is not punctual.
Below are more examples:
The late president Kennedy gave a famous speech, "Ich bin ein Berliner".
My sister's late husband left the family with a big debt.
The late schoolmaster was not very popular among students.
Last can also mean the most recent when it is
a time marker like last night, last month, last time, or last year.
Last can also mean coming after the others or the only remaining one.
For example:
He finished last in the race.
The last question of the page was the most difficult.
That's my last box of cookies. We will need to buy some more.
Last week, I read one of my students' writing which said "George W. Bush,
the last President of the United States
". We hope that it is not true.
What she meant to say was "the latest president"
Latest has the meaning of the most fashionable
or the newest.
For example:
The latest autumn collection just came out on a catalog.
What's the latest fashion statement?
Sony Music promotes its latest album by N'Sync on MTV.
Last conveys the meaning that there won't be anything
else after the last. You should be careful. The meaning depends on the context.
To be safe, you can use to most recent in place of last
and latest.
