Lately is often mistaken as the adverb form of the adjective, late.
That's not quite right. Lately is an adverb but it has no connection with late.
Lately has the same meaning as recently, or not so long ago, up until now.
It is usually used with the present perfect tense.
For example:
Have you been to the cinema lately?
My boss has been quite irritating lately.
Lately I have been thinking a lot about my future career.
William has some difficulty sleeping lately.
We haven't seen Bob around lately.
Late can be both adjective and
adverb. It is an adjective when it
follows the verb to be or precedes a noun. Late, the adjective, means not punctual or
not one time. On the other hand, late, the adverb, modifies verbs. It has the same meaning.
For example:
We have to work late tomorrow because the late shift supervisor takes a day off.
 (adverb)(adjective)-precedes a noun.
Jim has a late class every day this week.
(adjective)
Ken got up late so he was late for his meeting.
(adverb)(adjective) after the verb to be
Note:
lately (adverb) = recently
late (adjective and adverb) = not on time
