Much, Many and A Lot are used in different cases.
In an informal everyday speech, we can use much and many in negative sentences
and questions. In affirmative sentences, we use other words. Compare:
How much money do you
have?
I have plenty. Or I
have a lot. (NOT I have much.)
However, you can say I don't have much.
I haven't got many good
grades.
I have got a lot of
good grades.
We use 'lots of' and 'a lot of' before uncountable and plural nouns and before pronouns.
A lot of/ lots of + singular subject and verb
A lot of time is needed to learn a language.
There is lots
of coffee in the pot. (NOT There are lots of
)
A lot of/ lots of + plural subject and verb
A lot of my friends think Bangkok
is crowded. ( NOT A lot of my friends thinks
..)
Lots of people live
in the outskirt and commute to work in Bangkok.
A lot of
us would like to live good lives.
In a more formal speech, we use other words like a great deal of + singular,
a large number of + plural, or plenty of + singular or plural
Mr.Tul has spent a great deal of
time in New York.
We have a large number of
problems to solve.
Before the economic slump, there were plenty
of jobs and plenty
of money.
