Several hundred years ago, a man called Guy Fawkes led a gang which
planned to blow up the Houses of Parliament when the king went there
to perform a ceremony. Luckily, the barrels of gunpowder which they
had already placed in the cellars of the building were discovered
by a guard and the plot failed. Even now, Guy Fawkes Night, also known
as Bonfire Night, is celebrated in the UK on 5th November each year
to commemorate this event. A traditional rhyme begins:

The fifth of November
|
The main feature of Guy Fawkes Night is a bonfire on which a model
of Guy Fawkes is burnt, and fireworks. All the different types of
fireworks have names like Catherine Wheel
(Jennys favourite) sparklers, rocket
and so on. Some people celebrate in their own gardens while others
go to events held in parks or public places. Sometimes children sit
in the streets with their Guy Fawkes dummy and ask for money from
passers-by, saying, A penny for the Guy!
Traditional Guy Fawkes Night food includes a kind of a sticky cake
called parkin and treacle toffee
