My dog came back last night. Boyd and
I took out my dad's bike and rode around
the neighborhood. We looked in all the small
sois and everywhere possible. If you were
a lost dog, where would you be? Would you
stay in a market where you can easily get food
but it's crowded and you might get chased
away a hundred times a day? Or would you
lie low in a dim corner of a small soi where it's
quiet and people don't bother you so much?
I didn't know what my dog thought. We looked
all over the place. We looked at night because
the road wouldn't' be so busy and it could be
easier to spot the dog.

๙ สิงหาคม
หมาฉันกลับบ้านแล้วเมื่อคืนนี้ ฉันกับบอยขี่รถ
มอเตอร์ไซด์ของพ่อฉันออกไปตามหามันแถวบ้าน เรามอง
หาตามซอยเล็กๆ และทุกซอกทุกมุมเท่าที่จะทำได้ ถ้าฉัน
เป็นหมาหลงทาง ฉันจะไปที่ไหนนะ ฉันจะไปอยู่ที่ตลาดที่
ที่ฉันหาอาหารได้สดวกแต่ว่าคนเยอะและอาจจะถูกไล่
วันละหลายร้อยหน หรือฉันจะไปอยู่ในซอกเล็กๆ ตาม
ซอกซอยซึ่งเงียบและไม่ค่อยมีใครมากวนนัก ฉันไม่รู้ว่า
หมาฉันคิดอะไรอยู่ เราตามหาจนทั่ว ที่เราออกไปหา
ตอนกลางคืนก็เพราะว่าปลอดรถและคนและคงง่ายกับ
การหาหมามากกว่า

As we rode down the sois, we saw many dogs.
I didn't know whether they were strayed or not.
But at least they were not lost. I thought of Mom,
a lost dog once wandering into our neighborhood
and becoming a resident. I had little hope of finding
the Tiger, but the hope was there. I thought if I ever
spot a strange dog in the neighborhood, I'd feed him
thinking the owner might be worried the way I was.

ขณะที่เราขี่รถไปตามซอย เราเห็นหมาหลายตัว ฉันไม่รู้
ว่ามันเป็นหมาตามถนนหรือเปล่า แต่อย่างน้อยมันก็ไม่ได้
หลงทาง ฉันนึงถึงไอ้มอม หมาที่หลงทางมาแถวบ้านฉัน
แล้วตั้งถิ่นฐานอยู่เลย ฉันมีหวังน้อยมากที่จะหาไอ้เสือเจอ
แต่อย่างน้อยก็มีบ้าง ฉันคิดว่าถ้ามีหมาหลงมาแถวบ้าน

We came back home at around 1.30.
We were pretty hopeless. I went into the bathroom
to wash my face. Boyd was sitting outside facing
the gate. When I came out, I saw Boyd squashing.
I knew he was thinking of how he used to sit down
for the dog to lick his face. As I sat down beside him,
the dog just jumped in. It was a great surprise.
I guess he heard the sound of our bike and followed
us home. He must not have gone very far. Everyone
woke up to greet the dog. He was more happy
than hungry. He was jumping around licking
everyone. I was happy he got home at last.

เรากลับบ้านมาตอนประมาณตีหนึ่งครึ่ง เราท้อแท้สิ้นหวัง
เหลือเกิน ฉันเข้าห้องน้ำไปล้างหน้าล้างตา บอยนั่งมอง
ประตูอยู่หน้าบ้าน ตอนที่ฉันออกมา เห็นบอยนั่งยองๆ
อยู่บนพื้น ฉันรู้ว่าเขากำลังนึกภาพว่าเขากำลังนั่งให้ไอ้
เสือเลียหน้าอยู่ พอฉันนั่งลงใกล้ๆ เขา ไอ้เสือก็วิ่ง
พลวดพลาดเข้ามา เราประหลาดใจมาก ฉันเดาเอาว่า
มันคงได้ยินเสียงรถแล้วตามเรากลับบ้านมาเอง มันดีใจ
มากกว่าที่จะหิว มันกระโดดไปมาเลียหน้าทุกคน ฉันดีใจ
มากที่ในที่สุดมันก็กลับมา

Soon after the dog went to bed, I felt mad at him.
He had been gone for two whole days. Now he's
back with the same old stupid face pretending
that nothing happened. He didn't even call! I
went through all the trouble worrying about him
and looking for him for nothing. He was all right.
I should have known he would be all right.

หลังจากที่หมาไปนอน ฉันนึกโกรธมันขึ้นมา มันหายไปตั้ง
สองวันแล้วอยู่ๆ ก็กลับมาเอาดื้อๆ ทำหน้าโง่ทำเป็นว่าไม่
มีอะไรเกิดขึ้น จะโทรมาบอกหน่อยก็ไม่ได้ ฉันเป็นห่วง
แทบแย่ เสียแรงออกไปตามหา มันไม่ได้เป็นอะไรสัก
หน่อย ฉันน่าจะคิดได้ว่ามันไม่เป็นอะไรหรอก
