I used to be able to speak properly. I had a strong North American accent.
That was less than ten months ago. I have lost my charming American accent,
and I haven't gained anything to replace it. |

Before I left for the U.K., many people said 'Oh great! You will come back with a British accent.'
I thought 'What nonsense!' I had mastered the language (I'd like to think). I was no longer a child
and there was no way that I would sound different. How wrong I was. I have changed. |

Talking to some American friends back home, I hear remarks about my funny way
of speaking. They think I have lost my American charm, and my accent is rather flat.
Flat, that means you cannot tell where I have learned my English from. I haven't acquired the
prestigious British accent either. I'm a cross between British and American, a strange
combination. My written English is still pretty much American. I use colons instead of
commas, use 'z' in place of 's' |

Then I begin to catch myself saying 'bloke', 'rather' and 'sort of' when I
would usually say 'dude', 'pretty' and 'kind of'. Someone will have an eternally
bliss to hear me say, 'I had a cheese and tomato sandwich and a bag of crisps
for lunch.' This is serious, you know. I'm turning strayed. At this rate, I'm going to
go home with a British accent after all. And that's not a good thing. |
