I hate cell phones in class. Two semesters before
I used to mark my students absent if their phone
went off in class. Last semester, I didn't take attendance
because I didn't want to force my students to come to
class if they think they'd be better off elsewhere.
This semester, I've got a new idea. I fine students
whose phones or pagers go off in class. The first time
is five baht and the fine will double on next time even
though it's not the same person. Say A has to pay five
baht if his phone rings in class. The next day when B's
phone goes off in class, she pays ten baht. The money
goes to charity. I will donate the money I get to deaf children.
What's more, whoever calls in will get to talk to me and other
classmates. If it's a pager, we all get to read the message.
These rules also apply to me. It my phone sounds in class,
then my students can talk to my friend and I will have to pay the fine.

ฉันเกลียดโทรศัพท์มือถือในชั้นเรียน เมื่อสองเทอมก่อนที่
ผ่านมา ฉันจะเช็คชื่อว่านักศึกษาที่ปล่อยให้โทรศัพท์ดัง
ขาดเรียน เทอมที่แล้ว ฉันไม่ได้เช็คชื่อเพราะว่าฉันไม่
อยากบังคับให้ใครมาเรียนถ้าเขาคิดว่าเขามีอะไรอื่นที่ดี
กว่าการมาเรียนในห้อง เทอมนี้ฉันมีความคิดใหม่ ฉันปรับ
นักเรียนที่ปล่อยให้โทรศัพท์หรือเพจดังในห้อง ครั้งแรก
เก็บห้าบาท และค่าปรับจะเพิ่มเป็นเท่าตัวในครั้งต่อๆ ไป
ถึงแม้ว่าจะเป็นนักเรียนคนละคนกับคราวแรก สมมติว่า
โทรศัพท์เอดัง เอต้องจ่ายห้าบาท ต่อมาโทรศัพท์บีดัง เขา
ต้องจ่ายสิบบาท ฉันจะเอาเงินที่ได้มอบให้การกุศล ฉันจะ
บริจาคเงินให้เด็กหูหนวกนอกจากนี้คนที่โทรเข้ามาจะได้
คุยกับฉันและเพื่อนร่วมชั้นคนอื่น ถ้าเป็นเพจ เราทุกคนจะ
ได้อ่านข้อความที่เพจเข้ามา กฏนี้ใช้รวมถึงฉันด้วย หาก
โทรศัพท์ฉันดังขณะที่ยังสอนอยู่ นักเรียนของฉันจะได้คุย
กับเพื่อนฉันที่โทรมา และฉันเองก็ต้องจ่ายค่าปรับด้วย

Guess what? Someone called one of my
students today. I picked up and said, "Nut is in
his lecture. Do you have anything urgent to say to him?
If not, please call again at lunch time. He's in my
class every Monday morning." That should set
an example. I know I shouldn't humiliate my students
but I inform them first. If they don't know the difference
between public and private, then they have to learn
the hard way. If they think they can talk on the phone
in my class, I guess they don't consider it too personally
and don't mind sharing it with the class. I do hope they
learn and keep the phones off in public places.

ทายสิว่าเกิดอะไรขึ้น มีคนโทรมาหานักเรียนคนหนึ่ง
ฉันรับแล้วบอกว่า "นัทเรียนอยู่นะคะ มีธุระอะไรด่วน
หรือเปล่า ถ้าไม่มีกรุณาโทรมาใหม่ตอนกลางวันนะคะ
เขาเรียนอยู่ทุกเช้าวันจันทร์ อย่าโทรมาเวลานี้อีกนะคะ"
นั่นคงจะเป็นตัวอย่างที่ดีนะ ฉันรู้ว่าฉันไม่ควรทำให้นัก
เรียนขายหน้า แต่ถ้าเขาไม่สามารถแยกแยะเรื่องส่วนตัว
กับที่สาธารณะได้ เขาคงต้องได้รับบทเรียนราคาแพง
ถ้าเขาคิดว่าเขาคุยโทรศัพท์ในห้องของฉันได้ ฉันเดาเอา
ว่ามันคงไม่เป็นเรื่องส่วนตัวอะไรนัก และคงไม่รังเกียจที่
ฉันจะขอเอี่ยวด้วยคน ฉันหวังว่าเขาคงจะได้เรียนรู้และ
ปิดเสียงโทรศัพท์ในที่สาธารณะ ราตรีสวัสดิ์ กรุงเทพ
