I had to work all day on Sunday.
Honestly I didn't really want to,
but my private student I had over the summer
really likes me. He wanted to study with me
last semester but I was very busy.
This semester, he called again.
And how can I say no to such perseverance?
He is a good student who likes English.
He wants me to go to his house, which is miles away,
every Sunday to teach him for two hours.
His two brothers want to study too, but only
one hour each. They can't or don't want to
study together since they are at different levels.
This means I have to teach for four hours.
I'm not very happy about this.
But we all have to do something we don't
want to sometimes.

ฉันต้องทำงานตลอดวันอาทิตย์ จริงๆ แล้วฉันไม่อยากทำ
เลย แต่นักเรียนพิเศษที่ฉันเคยสอนช่วงปิดเทอมชอบฉัน
มาก เขาอยากให้ฉันสอนเมื่อเทอมที่แล้ว แต่ฉันยุ่งมาก
จริงๆ เทอมนี้เขาเลยโทรมาถามอีก แล้วอย่างนี้ฉันจะ
ปฏิเสธความตั้งใจจริงของเขาได้อย่างไร เขาเป็นนักเรียน
ที่ดี ที่ชอบภาษาอังกฤษ เขาอยากให้ฉันไปสอนที่บ้าน
ซึ่งอยู่ไกลสิบโยชน์จากบ้านของฉัน ทุกอาทิตย์เพื่อสอน
เขาสักสองชั่วโมง พี่ชายของเขาอีกสองคนอยากจะเรียน
ด้วย แต่จะเรียนคนละชั่วโมงเท่านั้น เขาเรียนด้วยกันไม่
ได้ หรือว่าไม่อยากเรียนด้วยกันก็ไม่รู้หล่ะ เพราะว่าระดับ
ภาษาของเขาต่างกัน ซึ่งหมายความว่าฉันต้องสอนถึง
สี่ชั่วโมง ฉันไม่ค่อยพอใจนัก แต่เราทุกคนล้วนต้องจำใจ

I don't want to take the job because
I don't need money. I'd prefer my time off.
Besides, I have to travel a long way and
the pay isn't good enough. The only reason
I take the job is that Ake is nice and he has
the right learning attitude. I don't want to kill it.
My four hours were great and I enjoyed the kids,
but I didn't enjoy the talk with their father.
He's an electrical engineer who quantifies
almost everything in binary system.
There are a number of points that he
took me by the wrong way.

ฉันไม่อยากรับงานนี้เพราะฉันไม่ได้ต้องการเงิน ถ้าเลือก
ได้ฉันเลือกที่จะมีเวลาว่างดีกว่า อีกอย่าง ฉันต้องเดินทาง

When we discussed my fee, I felt uncomfortable
because he saw it in term of business and tried
to persuade me to go down in price. My time
isn't for sale and you can't put a price tag on it.
I could just lie around doing nothing if it pleases me.
Money isn't the main motivation for me.
The money I will be making each Sunday equals to
what I can make in an hour somewhere else.
What's more, he'd like me to tutor the kids so
that they get higher scores in their exams.
That's totally my teaching philosophy. Okay,
it's not really a philosophy. It's just something I believe in.
I try to change my students' mindset about education.
They study because they want a piece of paper;
therefore, by the end of the year-right after the test
or even before that, they forget pretty much of what
they have learned. I want my students to be curious
and gain something by their inquiries. I want Ake
and his brothers to like English, to be good
at English, and to use English confidently and correctly.

เวลาที่เราตกลงกันเรื่องค่าสอน ฉันรู้สึกกระอักกระอ่วน

I don't know how long I can keep doing this.
