It is a nightmare to go shopping with a woman if you are not one.
And its annoying to go shopping with a non-female.
Simon and I are caught in this situation because we cant change our gender.
Nevertheless, he is kind enough to go shopping with me,
and Im selfish enough to take him along.
He often loses me in women fashion stores unless he chaperones me.
Sometimes we lose each other because Simon loses his patience waiting for me,
not because I take too long looking at sale items.

In order not to lose each other, we arrange a meeting spot.
Once, in a big shop, he told me to find him on the first floor when I finished with my crazy shopping.
I did go to the first floor and waited for him forever.
I normally dont have my phone on me when I go shopping,
so I couldnt call him. We finally met up after
I had realized that I was on the ground floor not the first floor of the shop.

When he said first floor, he meant the British first floor.
But my American-trained ears picked up the American first floor,
which is the British ground floor.
They start counting stories from ground floor and then first floor up is first floor
while Americans start right with the first floor and the next floor up is the second.
Huh, when will we ever understand each other?
The next time I arrange to meet someone,
I have to ask whether its the American second floor or the British first floor. |
