I'm actually furious when people assume
I have an easy life. Many students and
friendsnot colleagues-I meet these days
wonder what I am doing at the university
on the school break. Well, I don't have to
lecture now, but lecturing is not the only
thing teachers do. Not that I complaining.
When I tell people that I teach 9 hours
a week, they eyes are green with envy.
I said teaching 9 hours a week. I didn't
say I work 9 hours a week. I just hate assumption.

ฉันโกรธจริงๆ เวลาที่คนคิดว่าฉันมีชิวิตที่แสนสบาย

What I do at the uni during school break,
you ask? I mark test papers. I wrap up the
semester. I plan for the new semester
and let me tell you, one month is not
enough to prepare for the next 16 weeks.
When I was in the TESOL program,
I spent 2 hours planning for my 15 minute
performance. I hate walking into a classroom
feeling empty. My students are not retards
who can't tell the difference between a good
lecture and an impromptu. However,
I start to wonder at this idea when they
think teaching is all that teachers do.
What else do I do? I am currently developing
a listening exercise for the resource center
or self access learning center. I am getting
ready to go back to school next year.
I am also looking for some research
opportunities. Is that all that I do? No,
I also stay on line and chat with friends
in the States. I take two hour lunch.
I occupy the office phone and stick
my nose into other people's business
or somewhere it doesn't belong. I leave
work at 2 in the afternoon (after my 2 hour lunch)
to go shopping. I wait until the bars are
open and keep the bartenders company
until they are closed. What an easy life I have?

I also want to add that some teachers
don't show up at work during school
breaks because they figure getting
ready and driving to work take at least
two hours off their working time. So they
decide to take work home. You know,
I make it my working philosophy not to
take work home. But as you see,
I haven't been very successful at that.

institutions do it, but this is how we,
willing slaves to our labor, are at Thammasat.
If you feel envious of my 'comfortable'
life,
well, I've earned it. So get off my
