I heard something really gross the other day.
Would you like to hear it? Whether or not-here I'm
telling you. My niece told me that Din, a stray dog in
my neighborhood, ate her young. What?! She gave
birth to two pups this morning and now you can only
see a head a few legs and some skin. Yak! I hope
you are not eating. I didn't dare go to see it. I didn't
believe my niece, but why would she say such things
if they were not true. She has passed the age when
she would invent something or make up a story.

ฉันได้ฟังเรื่องน่าขยะแขยงมาเรื่องหนึ่ง เธออยากฟังไหม
อยากหรือไม่อยากฉันก็จะเล่าหล่ะนะ หลานสาวฉันบอก
ฉันว่าไอ้ดิน หมาแถวบ้านกินลูกตัวเอง อะไรนะ มันออก
ลูกมาสองตัวเมื่อเช้านี้ แต่ตอนนี้เหลือแต่หัวกับขาแล้วก็
เศษหนัง แหวะ ฉันหวังว่าเธอคงไม่ได้ทานข้าวอยู่นะ ฉัน
ไม่กล้าไปดู แต่ก็ไม่เชื่อหลานหรอก แต่เขาจะพูดอย่างนั้น
ทำไมถ้ามันไม่เป็นเรื่องจริง เขาโตผ่านช่วงวัยที่แต่งเรื่อง
ขึ้นมาแล้วคิดว่าเรื่องที่ตัวเองแต่งเป็นเรื่องจริงแล้ว

My mom confirmed this. She said some mean dogs
ate their pups when they become new moms.
They might not know what to do. Can you imagine
what my face was like as my mom said this?
Probably like yours now. Then she gave a sensible
explanation. Dogs do not take to courses on breeding.
They attend no medical school. They have no wet
nurse around. Imagine what they would do when
they have pain in the stomach and another body
(or bodies) is coming out of them. Pretty scary, ha?

แม่ฉันบอกว่าจริง แม่บอกว่าหมาใจร้ายบางตัวกินลูกของ
ตัวเองตอนที่มีลูกใหม่ ๆ พวกมันไม่รู้ว่าจะทำอย่างไรดี
เธอพอจะนึกออกไหมว่าฉันทำหน้าอย่างไรตอนที่แม่ฉัน
พูดอย่างนี้ ก็หน้าเหมือนที่เธอทำอยู่นี่แหละ แต่แล้วแม่ก็
อธิบายให้ฟังว่า หมามันก็ไม่ได้ไปเทคคอสเรียนการเป็น
แม่หรือการทำคลอดมาจากไหน ตอนคลอดก็ไม่มีหมอ
ตำแย ลองนึกดูสิว่ามันจะทำอย่างไร ถ้ามันปวด
ท้องอย่างหนัก และอยู่ๆ ก็มีตัวอะไรก็ไม่รู้โผล่ออกมาจาก
ตัวมัน น่ากลัวไหมนี่

When pups are born they are covered in water
from the womb. I don't know what you call it, sorry.
Then there is this connecting line from which the
young gets food for the mother. The dog will have
to lick the pup clean and chew off the connecting
line. A newly trained mother doesn't know how to
do this. Don't count on instinct. My mom's guess
was that she might have licked the fragile bodies
too hard and the stomach broke. She went panicky.
She licked on and on. Once she came to senses,
the whole body was gone back to the mom's stomach.

พอลูกหมาคลอดออกมา ตัวมันจะเปียกเต็มไปด้วยน้ำ
คล่ำ แล้วก็มีสายสะดือซึ่งเป็นทางลำเลียงอาหารจากแม่
ไปสู่ลูก แม่หมาต้องเลียตัวลูกหมาให้สะอาดแล้วก็กัด
สายสะดือออกเสีย แม่หมามือ (ลิ้น)ใหม่ จะรู้ได้อย่างไร
ว่าต้องทำอย่างนี้ อย่าคิดว่าเป็นเรื่องสัญชาติญาณเลย
แม่ฉันเดาเอาว่าแม่หมาคงเลียแรงไปหน่อย ท้องลูกหมา
จึงแตก แล้วแม่หมาก็คงจะตกใจ ยิ่งตกใจก็ยิ่งเลีย พอรู้
ตัวอีกทีลูกก็หายกลับเข้าไปในท้องแม่หมาอีกแล้ว

From this photographic description, I believed
that my mom must have been there. Maybe not.
No she didn't. But her second theory sounded
more believable that the one with a "mean" bitch.
