The second best thing I like about this country is the British Library in London. I don't mean I like it less than
the Co-Op, but I found this out after the Co-Op. Some things actually work in this country and it does work well.

Every reader must have a library card and you have to show it when you enter and when you order and
collect books. This is done swiftly and all you have to do is to fill out a form. They will make you a card right
there in less than 5 minutes. You don' t have to bring a photo since it's taken right there. I only had to show
them my student card. This will be different, of course, if you are not a student. |

Then you go to the cloak and locker room. I didn't leave my coat in the cloakroom. I used a locker and put
everything in there. Bags are not allowed, so I just took out my notepad. You don't have to pay for the locker
either. You just leave a deposit of 1 pound in the locker and take the key. If you have to carry a lot of things
with you, a clear plastic bag is provided. |

Once you get into a reading room, you should find a seat. Then order your books through the computer
network. They say that it might take up to one hour if they are busy and can't find your books. But it took them
less than 10 minutes to bring my book. You have to quote your seat number when ordering even though they
don't bring books to your seat.

After collecting your book, you can work and everything, and I mean everything, is so right. The table is big
enough; the chair is comfortable; the lightning is sufficient; and other readers are professional. I was not
bothered at all. There's an area where you can plug in your computer if you bring one. This is good since the
typing sound might disturb other readers, so you keep it in one section. |

I really love that library and I will definitely spend a lot of time there in the next few months. The library is open
from 9.30am to 8pm and my library card is valid for 5 years. The only little thing I don't like is that you can't
handle your own books. You have to choose from the catalog. Many times I turn to the content page and the
book isn't of use to me. In other libraries, I can put it back on the shelf. At the British Library, I will have to
order it and return it right afterwards. That means more work for the staff. But I see the reason why
the shelves are not open for everyone. |
