Mama and Maggie are my most beloved friend. I learned to love them on my trip to Germany and Ayutthaya.

มาม่าและแมกกี้เป็นเพื่อนที่ฉันรักมากที่สุด ฉันเริ่มรักเขา
ตอนที่ไปเยอรมันและอยุธยา

Are you one of those people who packs up
instant noodles, fish sauce, hot dip, sticky rice
and anchovies when you go abroad?
I used to look at those people with scorn.
When I went to school in Canada, I didn't bring
any of those things. I lived on fast food and
western food back here anyway. I later got home
sick and had to stock them up from Asian food
store. I didn't learn the lesson then.

อาหารฝรั่งมากกว่าอาหารไทยอยู่แล้ว แต่ฉันเกิดคิดถึง
บ้านขึ้นมา และต้องไปเพิ่งร้ายขายของชำในไชน่าทาว์น
แต่ฉันก็ยังไม่เข็ด

When I went to Germany with the
German language students from the
university in May, I still carried the
same attitude. Me is a guy but he had
almost every kind of instant noodles
and snack found in our supermarket.
I thought, "What's the point of going
abroad if you do not open up and are
not ready to learn new things?" We would
be gone for only two weeks. We wouldn't
get majorly homesick or anything.
But every evening in Germany, the kids
would gather at Me's head quarter even
though they had had dinner. I felt sorry for these kids.

ตอนที่ฉันไปเยอรมันกับกลุ่มนักเรียนภาษาเยอรมันที่
มหา'ลัย ฉันยังคงมีทัศนะคติแบบเดิม หมีเป็นผู้ชาย แต่
เขามีทุกบะหมี่กึ่งสำเร็จรูปเกือบทุกแบบ และของขบเคี้ยว
ที่เราเห็นตามซุปเปอร์มาร์เก็ตทั่วไป ฉันคิดว่า "ถ้าคิดจะ
ไปเมืองนอกแล้วไม่พร้อมที่จะเปิดรับสิ่งใหม่ๆ แล้วจะไป
ทำไม" เราไปแค่สองอาทิตย์ ไม่ทันจะคิดถึงบ้านก็กลับ
แล้ว แต่ทุกเย็นที่เยอรมัน เด็กๆ จะไปรวมตัวกันที่ศูนย์
บัญชาการของน้องหมี ถึงแม้ว่าเขาจะได้ทานอาหารเย็น
เรียบร้อยแล้ว ฉันรู้สึกเสียใจแทนเด็กพวกนี้จริงๆ

Then one evening, I met a turning point
in my life. We were in Bernau, an out-skirt
of Berlin. Our hotel was right next to
a shopping mall, which was closed at 8.
I already conducted a survey and planned
to go for some pizza at dinner. At 7.30,
I went down to find out that the shop was
still open, but all of the pizza was sold.
They wouldn't make new ones since it was
almost closing time. Well, well. I was starving.
All-day-walking gave me large appetite
suited for a horse. I had to go to Me's headquater
for a cup of noodles. Let me tell you this:
it was the best noodles I ever had.

และแล้วเย็นวันหนึ่งฉันก็ได้พบกับจุดพลิกผันของชีวิต เรา
อยู่ที่แบร์เนา ซึ่งเป็นชานเมืองของเบอร์ลิน โรงแรมของเรา
อยู่ติดกับห้างซึ่งปิดตอนสองทุ่ม ฉันไปเดินสำรวจมาเรียบ
ร้อยแล้วและวางแผนว่าจะกินพิซซ่าเป็นอาหารเย็น พอ
ทุ่มครึ่ง ฉันลงไปซื้อพิซซ่าแต่ต้องพบว่าร้านยังเปิดอยู่ แต่
เขาขายหมดแล้ว เขาไม่ทำใหม่อีกเพราะว่าใกล้เวลาปิด
แล้ว ฉันหิวมาก การเดินทั้งวันทำให้ฉันหิวมากขนาดกิน
ม้าได้ทั้งตัว ฉันต้องไปยังศูนย์บัญชาการของน้องหมีเพื่อ
ขอเบิกมาม่าสักถ้วย มันเป็นมาม่าที่อร่อยที่สุดในชีวิต

It was toward the end of our trip. We had been
living on German food which consist mainly of
carbohydrate and fat. Not that I'm complaining,
but the food sucks! I've had enough bread,
sausages, and cheese to last me a life time.
That cup of noodles saved my life.

ตอนนี้เราเกือบได้กลับบ้านแล้ว ตลอดเวลาที่อยู่เยอรมัน
เรากินอาหารเยอรมันซึ่งเต็มไปด้วยแป้งและไขมัน อย่าหา
ว่าฉันบ่นเลยนะ แต่อาหารมันห่วยจริงๆ ฉันกินขนมปัง
ไส้กรอก และเนยแข็ง มากพอที่จะทำให้ฉันอิ่มอาหารพวก
นี้ไปจนตาย เอาเป็นว่า มาม่าถ้วยนั้นได้ช่วยชีวิตฉันไว้

If someone tells you that you are a bore who
has a big box of Mama in your suitcase,
don't listen to them and send them off to
Siberia if you can. They are not the one
starving with you in a hostile foreign land.
It's easy for them to say.

ถ้ามีคนว่าเธอว่าเป็นคนน่าเบื่อที่เธอหอบเอามาม่าไปเป็น
ลัง อย่าไปฟังเขา และส่งคนพวกนี้ไปไซบีเรียทันทีหากเรา
ทำได้ พวกเขาไม่ได้ไปอดอยากยากแค้นในดินแดนต่าง
บ้านต่างเมืองที่แสนแร้นแค้นกับเรานี่ เขาก็พูดได้

I felt in love with Maggie on the Ayutthaya trip.
Remember we had to cook our own meals?
Yak! The meals were edible only because
Maggie was there. It's magic. You just add
a few drops into any food and it will work the wonder.
The food on the barge was not that bad.
I'm just exaggerating to make a dramatic
effect-that is if any of the barge crew is reading this.

ฉันตกหลุมรักแมกกี้ตอนที่ฉันไปอยุธยา จำได้ไหมว่าเรา
ต้องทำอาหารกันเอง เรากินข้าวลงเพียงเพราะว่าเรามี
แมกกี้ในครัว มันช่างมหัศจรรย์จริงๆ เธอแค่เหยาะแมกกี้
ลงไปสองสามหยด ปาฏิหารย์ก็เกิดขึ้น อาหารบนเรือไม่
ได้แย่อย่างที่เธอคิดหรอก ฉันแค่พูดเว่อร์ให้มันน่าสนใจไป
อย่างนั้นเอง ถ้าหากว่าพวกที่ไปเรือกับฉันบังเอิญมาอ่าน
เจอเข้านะ

Don't believe me. Try it on yourself and tell
me if you get the same results. Next time
I will never leave the country without Mama
and Maggie. The AmEx card has a sign in
airports saying, "Anything else is extra luggage."
I think that means for the two ladies. Good night, Bangkok.
