We set off to LA with a new driver Kerwyn.
We took highway number one, which runs
along the Pacific coast. Impressive scenery
but Suay and Bee fell asleep in the back seats.
I sat in the front, so I got the play navigation and
disproved the rumor that Thai people, especially women,
don't read maps. Many don't. I do. |

พวกเราออกเดินทางไปแอลเอกับโชเฟอร์คนใหม่,เคอร์วิน
เราขับรถไปตามทางหลวงหมายเลข 1 ไปตามชายฝั่งแปซิฟิก
วิวสวยมากเลยแต่สวยกับบีหลับอยู่ข้างหลัง
ฉันนั่งอยู่ข้างหน้าทำหน้าที่เป็นต้นหน และพิสูจน์ข้อกล่าวหาที่ว่าคนไทย
โดยเฉพาะผู้หญิงอ่านแผนที่ไม่เป็น หลายคนเป็นเช่นนั้น แต่ไม่ใช่ฉัน |

We got to the hotel really late. Two hours later
that we anticipated because of the traffic on the highway.
We cruised around Sunset Blvd. Suay wanted to go to a
stripe club just for the experience. She has seen it on TV.
Then she would like to drop by at 7-eleven to get instant
noodles and drive to Breverly Hills, again because she has
seen it in a movie. What movie? Exactly. Everyone went "what movie?" |

เราไปถึงโรงแรมช้ามาก สายไป 2 ชั่วโมงจากเวลาที่คาดไว้
เพราะว่ารถติดบนไฮเวย์ เราขับรถเล่นตามถนนซันเซ็ต
สวยอยากไปดูเขาเต้นระบำแก้ผ้า เพื่อเป็นประสบการณ์
เขาเคยเห็นในโทรทัศน์ แล้วก็อยากไปเซเว่น
ไปซื้อมาม่าแล้วขับรถไปกินมาม่าที่เบเวลี่ฮิลส์
เพราะว่าเคยเห็นในหนังเขาทำ หนังอะไร? นั่นแหละ
ทุกคนถามว่า หนังบ้าอะไร |

Later, she wanted to go to a strip club for men to see
naked female bodies-just out of curiosity. She might have
seen it in a movie somewhere. Duhhhh. I'm from Bangkok
and I'm a woman. I had no need to see that. I was not
prepared to bend down so far as to walk into a strip joint with her.
I don't feel like justifying my reason though. At the end I gave in,
thinking I could do all this for her and I will do more. As we walked in,
Suay hesitated and suggested we go back to the hotel. Bee said
she was tired. Thank God for that, whoever s/he is. |

สวยอยากไปคลับที่มีเต้นโชว์ ไปดูผู้หญิงเต้นแก้ผ้า เพราะว่าใส่ใจใคร่รู้เฉย ๆ
เขาอาจจะเคยเห็นในหนังที่ไหนก็ไม่รู้ ฉันมาจากกรุงเทพฯ และฉันเป็นผู้หญิง
ฉันไม่สนใจอยากดูผู้หญิงโป้เลย ฉันไม่พร้อมที่จะลดตัวลงไปต่ำพอ
ที่จะเดินเข้าไปในสถานที่อย่างนั้นได้ ฉันไม่อยากจะอธิบายเหตุผลด้วย
แต่ในที่สุดฉันก็ยอม ฉันยอมสวยมากมายแล้ว ยอมอีกนิดจะเป็นไรไป
พอเราจะเดินเข้าไป สวยก็เปลี่ยนใจอยากกลับโรงแรม บีก็บอกว่าเหนื่อยแล้ว
ขอบคุณพระเจ้าไม่ว่าพระเจ้าจะเป็นใครก็ตาม |

Kurwyn was very patient with us. He is a friend of mine from
New York. He flew all the way from New York to see me in San
Francisco because it was easier than to fly to Bangkok or
London. He is very kind and is a great friend. |

เคอร์วินต้องใช้ความอดทนกับพวกเรามาก เราเป็นเพื่อนฉันมาจากนิวยอร์ค
เขาบินมาหาฉันที่ซานฟราสซิสโก เพราะว่ามันง่ายกว่าการที่จะบินไปหาฉันที่กรุงเทพฯ
หรือลอนดอน เขาใจดีมาก และเป็นเพื่อนที่ดีมากด้วย |

None of us drove or had a license so he had to drive all the way.
The two girls in the back were asleep most of the jurney. Once in a while,
Suay would open her mouth and say 'toilets' or 'McDonald's'.
We took the scenic No.1. route so that we can enjoy the view
but only Kerwyn and I did. We could have taken Route 101 which
is shorter. It was a long drive and I had to keep him company,
chatting the whole way. Despite all this, I had a fun day. Good night, Bangkok. |

ในบรรดาพวกเรา ไม่มีใครขับรถเป็นหรือมีใบขับขี่เลย
เขาจึงต้องขับรถคนเดียวตลอดทาง สองคนหลังรถหลับตลอดทาง
บางทีเราก็จะได้ยินสวยเปิดปากพูดว่าอยากเข้าห้องน้ำ หรืออยากกินแมคโดนัลด์
เราขับรถไปตามทางหลวงหมายเลขหนึ่งเพื่อดูวิว แต่มีเพียงเคอร์วินกับฉันเท่านั้นที่ได้ดู
เราน่าจะไปทางสาย 101 ก็ได้ซึ่งสั้นกว่า เขานั่งรถนานมากเลย
และฉันต้องตื่นอยู่คุยเป็นเพื่อนคนขับตลอดทาง ไม่ว่าอะไรได้เกิดขึ้นในวันนี้ฉันก็สนุกมาก
