Leaving Note
  27 April 2004

We have been on the topic of resignation. This week we will look at a leaving note, from the person leaving the company for whatever reason. Before leaving a company, you should writer a memo to announce your leave and to express your appreciation to your colleagues.

Here is an example of a retirement letter.

Dear all,
As you know, I have been assigned a new task of a retiree and will take up my position at the end of this month.

Over the last 30 years with ABC, I had a great opportunity to meet many great colleagues, some of whom have become mentors and personal friends. ABC is more than a home to me; it is my family. I have watched it grow and prosper. It is very sad for me to leave.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for your excellent work done and fine contributions to the company.

Best regards,

First of all, you will need to tell your colleagues when you are leaving and, if you wish, why.

For example:

Please be informed that I have resigned from my position as a finance controller from ABC, effective 30 April 2004.
Due to personal health problems, I have resigned from my position at ABC, effective immediately.
I have decided to pursue postgraduate education in economics and will leave ABC at the end of May.

Then you want to say some good words to your colleagues. You can say of how much you enjoyed working with the team and how much you have learned from your job. Also you can make personal thanks to some individuals.

I have greatly benefited from working with the sales team/ all of you.
I would like to express my deep appreciation to Mr. Tanaka, a great boss and teacher.
Special thanks to Ms. Brown for being a good friends and colleague.
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to work on your team.
