Letter Form
  12 August 2003

Welcome to the new lesson, presented to you by your Nanny. We have spent a long time on your grammar and English usage. Now it is time to put it in good use. Are you ready for a test?

In the ‘Business Letter Writing’, you will learn to write various kinds of letters such as requesting and giving information, arranging events, complaining, and apologising. We will also cover the style of writing in faxes, memos and e-mails. But the main focus is on letter since it is the most formal form. Once you have learned that, you can adapt it to suit other media of communication.

The first lesson is the ‘look’ of a letter, what is included and in which sequence. It might be slow getting started, but please be patient. A letter represents you and you should make it speak for you best.

Here is what a letter looks like:

23 Taksin Soi 5
Bangkok 10600 (your address)

Post Publishing Public Company Limited (recipient's address)
Bangkok Post Building
136 Na Ranong Road
Klong Toey, Bangkok 10110

4 August 2003 (date)

Dear Sirs/ Madams, (salutation)

I am writing in response to your advertisement in the Bangkok Post dated 1 August 2003 for the position of a sub-editor within your organisation. Could you please send me an application form and information pack regarding the position above?

I look forward to your reply.

Sincerely yours, (complimentary close)

Manee Rakkiet (your signature and the print of your name)

In the above letter, I used the full-block pattern. That means you do not have to worry about page layout. You can just start typing at the left margin. Note that it is a good idea to break each paragraph with a line.

Below are what the 'modified-block' and 'semi-block' look like:

Modified-block:
Your address, date and the closing are on the right hand side of the page.

  23 Taksin Soi 5
  Bangkok 10600

Post Publishing Public Company Limited
Bangkok Post Building
136 Na Ranong Road
Klong Toey, Bangkok 10110

Semi-block

Similar to the modified-block, the semi-block uses indented paragraph.
