Making Requests
  30 October 2003

For the past few weeks, we have been on the subject of resume. We will give that a rest now and move on to other kinds of letters you may want to write.

Making requests is a common letter, and it is easy to write. For brevity, only the body of the letter is given here:

Dear Sirs/Madams:

I have a canteen of silver cutlery, some of which are missing. I would like to replace them. I am not sure whether you still hold stock of the particular pattern I have. Would you be kind enough as to send me a copy of your recent catalogue and price list?

Thank you in advance. I would appreciate and look forward to your reply.

Firstly, you would like to introduce yourself, why you would like some information or how you have acquired the contact address.
As an alternative to self-introduction in the above letter, you could give the source of the information you have.

I have seen your advertisement in _________. I would appreciate some more information.

Regarding one of your articles in the recent issue of House & Gardens, I would like to enquire more about the antique featured on page 55.

Secondly, you should be clear about what you would like to receive.
